One of the easiest and one of the most fun ways to learn guitar is through the re-hashing of existing ideas. By taking a riff that either you invented, (or a musical idea from one of your favorite songs), and altering it in some way you'll create something brand new and you'll likely learn a few fresh musical ideas along the way!

Many scales and exercises will lock players into one position on the neck. However, by developing expertise for shifting positions smoothly we can create more flow and balance to our guitar licks or melodic phrases. As long as the phrases are well rehearsed and we know exactly where we're headed, our shifting will come across as very smooth sounding.

Everyone who plays an instrument wants to have a great ear for lifting musical ideas quickly and easily. The only problem is many musicians fail to put the work into developing their ears. The link between what we hear and what we can play rests within the study of singing notes. By doing note singing exercises we internalize tones and thus build a strong link between how notes both sound and feel.

Playing a song up to a serious level of perfection is only part of the big-picture for being a good musician. The flip-side of being a skilled player is being able to both quickly and correctly analyze a set of chords within a progression. The speed and accuracy with which a player can accomplish this goes a very long way when it comes to performing melodies and solos.
