British rock groups like Supertramp, Dire Straits and Jethro Tull have a no-frills approach to their chord progressions and melodic song writing style. The rich melodies and guitar work gets the listener to really take notice of the music. This guitar style also creates a clean romantic musical effect as well. In the lesson I discuss the scales and chord harmonies that reveal the depth of this music.

The open position chords are one of the first and most well known groups of chord patterns guitar players study. However, if players do not expand upon this group, their skills for Rhythm Guitar tend to suffer. By using the popular CAGED System we can move this group out of the open position and gain dozens of new chords across the neck.

Superimposed Scales and Polytonality
The layering of two independent scales at once creates a very unique sound. The musical color of which only works for certain styles of music. Jazz, Progressive Rock and Fusion tend to employ these sounds most often. However, many classical pieces use this interesting polytonal sound as well.

When it comes to the study of guitar styles, phrasing and general theory, we can learn a lot from the recordings of world famous guitar players. However, one often overlooked study approach is the adoption of the training books designed for other instruments. These can include Piano, plus the Brass and Woodwind instruments. Most of these books cover the more complex musical styles of Jazz and Classical, so our theory and technique can improve rapidly.
